Injustice and dignity

ARA's Editor-in-ChiefThere are images that bring with them a blast of reality. A miserable blast that presents us with a reality which we would prefer not to face up to, but which nevertheless remains unchanged in spite of our outrage.

ARA has published a video which is proof of the Spanish government’s inability to deal politically, bravely, with Spain’s great political issue: Catalonia. The footage shows three honest men inside Estremera prison, where two of them have spent more than 210 days. They are political prisoners who were voted for by hundreds of thousands of Catalans. We picture their daily life within the walls of a prison that we have seen from the outside so many times. We see them within the five-metre high concrete walls that hold them. These are images both of injustice and of dignity.

Oriol Junqueras, Joaquim Forn and Raül Romeva occupy a wing where the inmates are responsible for organising their daily chores and free time activities. They help other prisoners in a classroom, teaching philosophy and economics to anyone who wishes to study. This newspaper obtained the video through its investigation team and mailbox. We believe its journalistic and informative value is self-evident, justifying its publication. Their families were previously notified of its existence. Showing reality helps highlight an injustice that mustn't go unnoticed, which mustn’t be forgotten and which mustn’t be overlooked in our daily life.
